High School Math: SHSID Student Performed Well in 2023 Shanghai Mathematics Application Competition for High School Students
In the recently announced results of the 2023 Shanghai Mathematics Application Competition for High School Students, SHSID 12th grade student Joey achieved an excellent result by winning the second prize in the individual event.
Established in 1992, the Shanghai Mathematics Application Competition for High School Students aims to improve students' mathematical application and problem-solving abilities, as well as cultivate their innovative thinking and mathematical modeling skills. This competition emphasizes the integration of mathematical thinking methods in mathematical activities, develops students' thinking abilities, fosters a spatial concept, and enhances their ability to apply learned knowledge to real-life problems, thereby enhancing their practical skills and innovative awareness.
The individual competition consists of two rounds and mainly assesses students' ability to solve applied problems, covering topics such as statistics, linear programming, probability, and geometry, which are common in high school. The competition covers a wide range of mathematical knowledge and emphasizes the integration of different disciplines, with a depth and difficulty that requires students to possess a strong mathematical literacy. Additionally, the competition attracts a large number of participants and is highly competitive. In 2023, high school students of SHSID participated in the competition for the first time. After the preliminary round in May and the offline final in September, Joey competed with numerous high school students from local schools in Shanghai and delivered excellent performance, earning this honor.
Mathematical application abilities and awareness are critical aspects of the core mathematical competencies and are also important content in the teaching of mathematics in the international school. Through careful guidance both inside and outside the classrooms, the High School Math Department is pleased to discover that more and more students are enthusiastic and interested in mathematics application competitions. They actively explore and learn from each other, creating a good atmosphere of inquiry. We will continue to uphold the teaching philosophy of "learning for application" and provide students with high-quality and comprehensive mathematical education to help them become outstanding talents with international perspectives, innovative thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
