Grade 9 Assembly: Set Theory

September 27, 2023

When the students first entered high school, they encountered a brand-new mathematical concept called sets. This new concept can be difficult to understand. Due to this reason, on September 26, 2023, Hans from Class 9(1) and Arden from Class 10(3) were invited to give a brief lecture on the origin and basics of sets and Russell’s Paradox.

The two students began with Barber’s Paradox as an example, vividly explaining Russell’s Paradox to combine the two ideas together. Next, they introduced the main historical characters and events that contributed to the formation of sets. In addition, more real-life examples were also given to demonstrate how this knowledge can be utilized in daily life. Towards the end of the speech, Hans and Arden also explained the basic mathematical logic behind sets, connecting it with the information taught in math class.

This short lecture was given in hopes that it could provide academic help and support to the ninth graders, especially during their transition period into high school, and it could help build students' interests in math learning.
