G7 | History & Geography Department: History Project — Designing Reformation Theme Park
The Reformation in Europe was an important event in the transformation from the Middle Ages to the modern society. There were many different religious sects. How can the students understand the teachings of various sects and the significance of the Reformation movement? In Grade 7 history class, the students completed this learning task by a project of designing a "Reformation Theme Park".
The students were tasked with taking the role of architects and designing a theme park based on one of the factions of the Reformation. They learned about that faction, then decided how to best represent their ideas and beliefs, and finally combined those beliefs with the attractions such as rides and food stands, and all these should also be amusing and appeal to children and adults.
There were many creative ideas demonstrated in the students' projects, such as the maze composed of "95 Theses”, the Calvinist Fate Park, the roller coaster simulating the Defenestration of Prague, the Renaissance Gallery sponsored by the Pope, the Ferris wheel and the dining center decorated with religious elements, the haunted house stimulating the experience of hell, and the tickets designed as indulgence, all of which reflected the students perfectly combining the Reformation with different amusement items together in their park design.
After the project was completed, the teachers organized a gallery walk for students to teach each other. From others' designs, the students could not only learn about different religious factions, but also absorb creative ideas. Although this project was only a design proposal on paper, the combination of learning and entertainment was indeed an interesting experiment. Maybe one day, there will be some designers among them who will turn their works into reality!
