May 16, 2023

After two months of the competition, "Green Globe" Environmental Solutions Challenge, part of the SHSID Science Fair, held its final evaluation recently, namely 2023 SHSID Student Conference on Environment Solutions. The challenge officially began in March, with 175 teams signing up to participate. After a series of pre-training sessions from both external experts and internal mentors, initial screening, and individual project training, 21 teams advanced to the final evaluation stage to showcase their personal works. The event also featured 8 teams who presented their works and did defense at the conference.

The challenge was divided into two sections. Section one was the "Sustainable Campus" Creative Design Project, requiring students to design an environmentally friendly, green ecology, and sustainable campus design plan. Additionally, the project was a gift to celebrate SHSID's 30th anniversary, bringing a new atmosphere of environmental protection and sustainable development to the campus. Section two was the "Climate Change" Scientific Research Project, which focused on the Paris Agreement to reduce climate change. Students were required to submit scientific research plans to reduce carbon emissions to achieve sustainable development goals.

The final evaluation forum took the form of an academic conference, with Professor Meng Xiangzhou from Tongji University's College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Associate researcher Tong Chunfu from East China Normal University's State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research, and Coordinator Jia Qian, from the UNDP - Tongji University Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development, as the judges. They jointly evaluated the students' environmental solution proposals. The conference began at 2:30 pm with a special lecture titled "Environment and Health" by Professor Meng Xiangzhou, which detailed the hazards of environmental pollution and climate change to human health. The lecture not only deepened students' understanding of the relationship between environment and health, but also inspired them to think and explore more.

Next, the academic poster exhibition and expert questioning section began, where the 21 selected teams presented their works and answered the judges' questions. 8 teams advanced to the final product presentation. Irina from Class 4(5) proposed using the Bacasi composting method to increase the utilization of campus waste; Kelly from Class 6 (10) designed a green roof and proposed a device that collects rainwater for electricity generation; Andrew from Class 6(1) proposed a plan for the ecological reconstruction of Zhongxing Lake; Justin from Class 8(3) and Angelina from Class 6(12) worked together to design four campus improvement plans, including organic waste treatment, school gardens, roof gardens, and auditorium heating systems; Angelina from Class 6(2) proposed a concept for recycling old school uniforms; Dora from Class 6(3) designed a water purifier, which can reduce water waste; and Eric from Class 6(3) proposed his ideas on climate change and ecological protection.

During the closing speech, Mr. Liu Lian, SHSID middle and primary school principal, congratulated the winning students and praised them for their strong creativity, innovative mindset, and perseverance in independent learning and research studies. Principal Liu also encouraged students to invest more in academic studies to lay a solid foundation for their future research studies.
