Puxi G1: Dictionary Competition

April 4, 2023

A small dictionary is a silent teacher and a good assistant for students. By learning to look up the dictionary, students can not only look up the pronunciation, meaning and common words of Chinese characters, but also cultivate an independent learning ability. The first-grade teachers taught the children the phonetic and radical search method for the last two weeks. In order to improve students' ability to use dictionaries, the first grade in Puxi campus organized a dictionary competition on March 30th.

At the beginning of the game, the teachers firstly explained the rules of the competition. Students needed to write the phonetic sequence, radicals, page numbers, words, and chose the correct meaning for the Chinese characters in the words within 20 minutes. As soon as the bell rang, the students skillfully flipped through the dictionary. Everybody was super focused. In the classroom, no other sound could be heard except for the rustling sound of flipping through books. Some frowned because they couldn't find the radicals, and some were delighted because they found the target Chinese characters. The student who finished first took a long breath to release the tension, while those who hadn't finished were still working on it patiently. After the competition, the teachers awarded honorary certificates of "little expert in dictionary lookup" to the students who searched quickly and accurately.

Although the dictionary is small, it contains rich knowledge. Although the activity didn’t last very long, it has far-reaching meaning. This competition further stimulated students' interest in using dictionary reference books and improved their skills in using dictionaries. We hope that all the students in SHSID can develop a good habit of frequently looking up dictionaries!
