Lectures on Teachers’ Mental Health

April 15, 2022

Since online teaching started, SHSID’s high school teaching team has been working together to guarantee highly-efficient online learning, caring for students' physical and mental health, and maintaining smooth communication with parents. During this special period, teachers' healthy mental state is the premise to ensure efficient work. Recently, two lectures focused on teachers' mental health during online school were held to help teachers adjust to the psychological conditions as well as keep a positive mood.

On the afternoon of April 11th, high school teachers gathered online to listen to Christina Sloan’s lecture. As a psychology teacher at SHSID, Ms. Sloan opened the lecture with soothing words. Under the impact of the epidemic, our city pressed the pause button, and long-term work-from-home challenged us both physically and mentally. However, Ms. Sloan pointed out that people all have "resilience" to cope with stress, to gradually recover from adversity, and to regain strength even in disorder. Ms. Sloan suggested that hunting for the good stuff and looking for positives can help people keep up their spirits. Besides, regular exercise, adequate sleep and sunlight, and a balanced nutritious intake can all help prevent depression. As a psychology expert rich in the experience of youth counseling, Ms. Sloan also gave targeted suggestions on students' mental health during online school time. At the end of the lecture, Ms. Sloan played an anti-anxiety video made by teachers at home. Warm pictures and music brought great comfort to all those in the audience.

On the evening of April 14th, a lecture was delivered by Mr. Xu Gan, from "iWill Volunteer Joint Action". First, Mr. Xu introduced the sources of teachers' stress during online teaching. Through several interesting stress test games, Mr. Xu learned about teachers' current stress levels. The change of working style now will inevitably bring about physical and mental problems, but through emotional adjustment methods, we can keep the amount of stress at a healthy level. Next, Mr. Xu led the teachers to brainstorm together, sharing all kinds of strategies for psychological adjustment at home -- healthy lifestyles, adequate social connections, sports, meditation, home-based parent-child activities, etc. Mr. Xu also led the teachers to play a simple piece of Djembe rhythm, guiding the audience to confront the uncertainty in life through music.

Teachers learned a lot from these two lectures. Let's keep our good moods, overcome the difficulties together, and wait patiently for our return to campus.
