Inheritance and Innovation — the Recent Activities of the High School Mathematical Modeling Team

October 12, 2021

At the beginning of the new school year, the leaders of the high school mathematical modeling club actively produced various exquisite posters to recruit new members. SHSIDers usually have extremely rich extracurricular activities. Every year, many students cannot participate in the after-class club sessions every Thursday due to various conflicts. This year, the club has made bold innovations. In addition to the fixed offline club activities, leaders also launched weekend online classes and uploaded self-made learning videos on Youku, Tencent Video, and other platforms, attracting more students interested in mathematical modeling.

The High School Mathematical Modeling Club was established in February 2012. After nearly a decade of development, it has become a camp for students to explore interdisciplinary knowledge and spark thinking. After learning from the club, a group of students won awards in two high school mathematical modeling competitions: HiMCM (the American High School Mathematical Modeling Competition) and IMMC (the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge).

During the summer vacation, due to their outstanding performance at the 2021 IMMC , the team of 4 students from the class 2024, Allen, Nick, Jiho, and Vincent, had the honor to be invited to participate in the 14th International Mathematics Education Conference and made a wonderful academic report in one of the theme activities —— "IMMC Theme Activities: Classroom Mathematics Modeling”. The International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME), held every four years, is the highest level and largest academic conference in the global mathematical educational community under the guidance of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI). Being invited to attend the meeting is the recognition of the results in the learning and teaching of mathematical modeling in our school.

In the international competition of IMMC 2021, the problem "Who is the greatest athlete?” was proposed. Together with four other teams from Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Spain, the team from our school showed different solutions to the same problem, fully demonstrated the openness and creativity of mathematical modeling, and brought deep mathematical modeling experience to the teachers and students at the meeting. We can now understand the modeling strategy of our team through the following video.

The awards are inseparable from the support from the school and all math teachers at SHSID. The rich curriculum system contributes to the development of students' comprehensive quality. In addition, the electronic resources and reference books purchased by the school, as well as the invited expert lecturers, are constantly expanding the students' knowledge so that they can focus more on their interests. At the 2021 IMMC China Summit and Mathematical Modeling Summer Workshop, the organizing committee awarded us the IMMC Inter-School Cooperation Award in recognition of our remarkable achievements in the popularization of mathematical modeling education.

We believe that the club activities in the new school year will be more wonderful. More interested students are welcome to join the club, to apply mathematical knowledge to real life, and do their best to contribute to the community.
