Puxi Campus Grade 2: The First “Hand-in-Hand” Chinese Weiqi (Go) Competition

October 16, 2020

Chinese Weiqi, known as Go in English, is an abstract strategy board game containing grids of lines and stones to surround territory. To promote this time-honored Chinese culture, strengthen the cooperation between Shanghai High School (SHS) and Shanghai High School International Division (SHSID), and encourage students’ passion for learning Go, the first Hand-in-Hand Chinese Weiqi (Go) Competition was held on the afternoon of October 14th. It was a great privilege to have Shizhen Liu, the vice-dean of Shanghai Chess Academy and the head coach of the Shanghai Go Team watch this competition. Also in attendance were Zhigang Feng, SHS Principal, and Hui Wang, Secretary of the CPC party committee of SHS, cheering the students on.

This competition adopted the Chinese Go rules. Each high school student partnered up with one Grade 2 student to form 10 teams in total. The little players would place the stones under the guidance of their high school teammates. All participated with great enthusiasm and showed extreme caution with each move on the board. After nearly 30 minutes of fierce competition, five teams won first prize and the other five teams won second prize and some excellent participation awards. Shizhen Liu delivered a speech at the end. He affirmed and highly appreciated this activity, praised the students’ Go skills and expressed his hope of that they would continue learning Go.

A small board has lots of wisdom hidden in it. All of the students said how much they loved this activity and they truly learned a lot. We believe in the Go spirit of taking the big picture into consideration, disregarding gains and losses, and never giving up will be embedded in every aspect of students’ learning and life. This will inspire them to move forward with perseverance and become their best selves!
