Puxi Campus Grade 4: Geometry City Project

June 12, 2020

Chapter 8 of G4 Math focuses on Geometry. To consolidate what has been learned, a Geometry City Project was assigned to the students.

The students worked as companies to create a city of geometric shapes, angles, and lines. They needed to follow the construction specifications, which included parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines, as well as 2D shapes like the trapezoid and rhombus. 3D shapes like the cylinder, pyramid, cone, and sphere needed to be shown as well. Tessellations were also included in each city near a body of water that had symmetrical lines. The students came up with various creative names and themes for their cities.

After three weeks of “construction”, the students finished their projects and brought them to school. In Music City, the theme was shown with buildings of the shapes of musical instruments. The cities featuring amusement parks was the children’s favorite. The tropical cities with a beach also attracted much attention. The engineers of some cities were very environmentally friendly. They used materials in daily life like bottles and cans to build their cities.

Students really liked this math project. It not only helped them to review what they have learned in class but also offered them an opportunity to show their creativity. The fourth graders gained a sense of achievement and happiness during this Geometry City Project.
