Grades 5-6:Reading Under Same Blue Sky

On the morning of October 19th, the SHSID Grade 5 and 6 charity team arrived at Wulou Primary School, where the teachers and students were awaiting our arrival. We first entered the 5(1) classroom and visited the book corner we helped build through our donations.

Jenny’s mom hosted the meeting while both SHSID students and Wulou students introduced some of their favorite books. At the end of the meeting, the Wulou students gave our students hand-made presents.

After that, Ms. Shirley and Mr. Johnson gave the Wulou students two Math lessons in English. Ms. Shirley taught prime numbers, and Mr. Johnson taught fraction addition. Five SHSID students assisted during the lessons. Though their English was at a low level, the students of Wulou listened attentively and showed great learning ability with the teacher's guidance. After the math class, the young artists from Wulou performed the drama “Monkey Subdues White-Skeleton Demon". We cheered for their amazing performance.

Then, we had lunch and washed dishes with the kids there. Our students had time to play with their new friends.

As we left, we waved our hands and said goodbye to each other. It took us another 14 hours to get back to Shanghai. On the train, while eating instant noodles, our students shared their feelings about the trip.

Owen from 6(2) said: “In this event, the most remarkable thing that I experienced was that the fourth graders only prepared for 5 days and presented an amazing show. They were not nervous at all and did excellent. But what the teacher said was even more meaningful. She said ‘If you give the kids one chance, they will give you a miracle back!’ That sentence made me think—if we give them better learning materials and a better learning environment, they will grow up with a happy childhood, as well as better grades.”Yiwei from 6(2) said: “This was a meaningful trip, I learned a lot of things. I learned that reading is fundamental and really important. I also found out that some people my age cherish books like we would a jewel. Lots of the children's parents don't even have time to care for their kids. We are really lucky to have our parents love and care for us.”

Daniel from 6(8) said: “This time I went to Henan for a charity trip. For me, this was a very special trip that I won’t forget for the rest of my life. In Henan, I met a lot of kids who like to learn, and I have made a lot of friends who are all kind. I saw children who are eager to learn but are short in resources, so they are not able to learn as much as us. I think that I should cherish what we have, and also I will persuade more students to make more contributions to charity and help the children whom need more resources.”Daniel from 5(2) said: “Our visit to Wulou Primary School was the highlight of our trip to Henan. Children there love reading and they showed gratitude to us because SHSID donated to set up Reading Corners in their classrooms. Students chose to act out their favorite story for us. Eight kids in Grade 4 presented a show named "Monkey King Subdues White-Skeleton Demon". The show impressed me because of its humor and spirit. The adaptation included some 21st century elements like Wifi into the play. Students not only memorized their lines very well, but also spoke fluently and acted it out lively. I hope I can visit Wulou Primary School again.”

Jenny from 5(7) said: “I will never forget this event. Most of the parents of the children in the countryside go to big cities to work, so they don’t have time to look after their kids. Therefore, the grandparents take care of them. During these days, we learned together, played together, and shared our favorite books together. We all need attention and love, so we are the same. We should cherish everything around us. I am really lucky that I am a blissful child.
