Professional Development Training: Debate in Teaching

On the afternoon of September 26th, Mr. Cale Halley, the academic director of NSDA China, brought us a great session of professional development training: How to improve teaching by using debate as in-class activities. He emphasized the importance of speech and debate skills for students’ personal development. He pointed out that debate experience may help contribute to language skills, analysis, logical thinking, critical thinking and so on. Mr. Halley also combed through teachers’ possible professional development related to debate: being a coach for the school debate club, being a judge for NSDA competition, and bringing debate activities in to classrooms, just to name a few. During the training, Mr. Halley organized a debate on a simple topic for the teachers present; all the participants got excited! Through group discussion, teachers searched for data and combed through their arguments. The presentations were splendid: some were inspiring, some humorous, and some passionate. Teachers gained plenty of debate-related knowledge in the training and could see the vital role debate could play in teaching.
