Puxi Primary Section:Traditional Chinese Clothing Day

On April 27th, if you walked into SHSID’s Primary School, you would think that had you walked into ancient China. You would have seen girls dressed in beautiful traditional clothing with sleeves flapping in wind, and boys dressed in slender robe with extraordinary temperament. Even the teachers were in traditional clothing.

As you would have been able to see that day in the Primary School, Chinese history has seen quite a range of clothing. Dresses in the Tang Dynasty were graceful and gorgeous. Qipao from the early 20th century were curvaceous and soft. In the Republic of China, clothing was simple but elegant.

To prepare for Chinese Culture Week, the teachers designed all sorts of fun things. Outside of our building, two colorful flags welcomed all the students. Many classes took memorable class pictures in front of a big background wall in the lobby, which was decorated pictures of various Chinese objects and items. What's more important was the ‘Moments photo frame’, within which many students made funny and cute faces.

If you walked into our classroom, you would see many different interesting scenes. You would see Sun Wukong, the Monkey king, speaking English. You would see Liang Zhuge, a great leader from the Three Kingdoms period, solving math word problems, and one of the Calabash Brothers discussing a famous Chinese idiom which goes: ‘自相矛盾/zi xiang mao dun/his spear contradicts his own shield’. Wearing traditional clothes, the teachers felt that their kids behaved in a more demure and sedate way.

Traditional clothing day brought all the students and teachers back into the days of ancient dynasties and mythological stories... Clothing is one crucial part of the entire Chinese history. To know it well is to better understand China.
