Puxi Grade 5: Fraction Fast Speed Calculating Competition
Puxi Grade 5: Fraction Fast Speed Calculating Competition
It’s another sunny day at SHSID, with warm sunshine casting itself through the windows and soft wind blowing across the campus. At 12:30pm, on the 3rd floor library, there gathered some students who won the Fraction Fast Speed Calculation Contest of 2018. Congratulations to the Winners!
Through history, calculation has been one of the most important parts of Mathematics. From the ancient Greek mathematicians to the invention of π, in every kind of math, calculations are always needed, like in Geometry or Algebra. Without calculations, Math would be nonsense to us, wouldn’t it? If you are doing a fraction problem, and you are trying to solve it without calculation at all, then that wouldn’t be Math. This is how Math is special and different from other subjects. Calculation is what makes Math interesting and challenging. Calculations also include a kind of smart calculation. We can master calculation faster if we find GCF, simplify, and find composite numbers. Those ways make it easier for us to calculate. If you lack calculation skills, you will never be able to study Math.
Becoming advanced in calculation is no easy task. Thus, you have to calculate quickly and correctly to be efficient. If we calculate too fast, then we will make lots of careless mistakes, but if we are too slow, we won’t be able to finish our tests on time. So, it is important for us to keep pace and check our work carefully once we finish a question. Like playing musical instruments, when we calculate, we have to be on the beat and follow the rhythm. With fractions, we definitely have to be careful with the denominators and changing the mixed-numbers into an improper fraction.
This competition was a great experience for all of us. Calculation is a really important part of Math. Math is a basis for Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geology, and so many other disciplines. So, if you don’t want to pursue Math for your college major, it is still not irrelevant, because it’s needed in a lot in other careers too.
Calculation is also the basis for Math, so it would beneficial for all of us to keep improving our calculation skills. When you really understand the art of calculation, you will understand how fun and interesting it is. Maybe now you are not interested in Math, but if you practice calculation every day, I bet you will be surprised about how magical calculation is. From imaginary to real numbers, from Calculus to Trigonometry, you will finally know just how magical calculation can be. Now we are only in primary school, but as we get older, the skill of calculation is one that we need to master.
