AMC club: experience sharing on math competitions

On March 27, the AMC (American Mathematics Competition) club invited two students, Zhang Shengtong and Alex Li, to give a lecture on their math competition experience and their methods in solving math problems. Both students have experienced several intense math competitions and performed outstandingly in all of them.

Zhang Shengtong, the first speaker, introduced some AIME-style questions. He explained to the students that there are useful techniques which can be used in solving those problems, such as putting a triangular pyramid into a rectangular prism. After that, he informed the students that practice is beneficial because practice enables one to solve questions and utilize correct techniques much faster. He also recommended reading books on AoPS, which includes calculus, geometry, algebra, and so on.

After Zhang Shengtong’s lecture, Alex also introduced and explained some AIME-style questions. He introduced a lot of competitions that will follow on from the AMC. Lastly, he emphasized the importance of AoPS to these mathematical competitions.

This AMC club session was a valuable experience for both the speakers and the students.
