Grades 11-12: Psychology Lecture on Communicating with Teenagers

On the evening of December the 19th, a wonderful psychology lecture on how to communicate with teenagers was held in the Xianmian Building Auditorium from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The lecture was given by Mr. Matthew Pardy, a psychologist and Psychology teacher at SHSID. Parents, students and teachers from Grade 9-12 attended this lecture. The English lecture was also translated to Chinese simultaneously by student volunteers.

At the beginning of the lecture, Mr Pardy introduced how the teenages brain develops, and the importance of sleeping, pointing out the effect of sleep loss on emotions and on academic performance. He then advised ways in which parents can assist their teenagers. As there are many possible communication mistakes parents can make, he suggested many strategies, especially about on how to deal with momentary frustration, and how to support their children throughout the college application process. All in all, Mr Pardy strongly emphasized the importance of self-control and self-understanding to parents when talking with their children.

At the end of the lectures, the parents also asked some questions about how to educate and assist their children. For example, how to help their teenagers to establish proper self-discipline and how to encourage them to talk about their feelings. Several students also posed some questions about how to communicate with their parents. Through these positive interactions, the students and parents got to know each other better and find better ways to communicate.
