A Chinese Journey On The Tongue

On November 21st, there was cheers bursting in a classroom on the third floor of the junior middle school. However, there was no election contest or art activity going on there. Instead , the teacher Ms Zhuo and her students were studying Chinese. With the help of relevant texts, the Grade 7 level Adv-I Chinese class combined held a unique ‘food party’, featuring the cuisines of many different countries.

All of the food was brought in and often handmade by the teachers and students! From China's razor clams, wontons, brewing cake, and dongpo rou; to Japan’s rice balls and fruit; to Singapore’s sashimi and beef rolls; to South Korea's walnut cake, fried chicken, rice cakes and spicy noodles; to France's French sticks; to Germany’s candy; America’s pizza and potato chips, etc.

Ms.Zhuo feels that food that is the most interesting topic for children. The design of the event was carefully prepared. Firstly, each child was asked to prepare a food that was relevant to his or her national or ethnic tradition, either purchased or handcrafted. Then they should record the discovery of the preparation process and the introduction of this food in Chinese for communicating in the classroom.

Secondly came the class communicating and sharing activities. The children took turns introducing their own food, and voting for the most popular dishes and snacks. Finally, each student was required to write an essay discussing the activity.

The purpose of this activity was to entertain, and also take advantage of the students’ personal interest. Their teachers hopes to inspire them to take the initiative to explore the mysteries of culture and cultivate a global sense of citizenship, while at the same time exercising their reading and writing skills.

All the students discussed food in general while tasting the real food in their hands. When they communicated, the children not only exercised their Chinese oral expression abilities, but also understood the unique food culture many different countries, including their own! This was indeed a Chinese journey on the tongue!
