Service Learning Team: Korean Translation

This semester the 8th Grade Korean Translation service learning team started to provide their services by posting the Korean translations of SHSID’s important news articles in their official Wechat account. You can find it by searching for the ID: 韩文翻译.

Language differences have been a significant problem for most of SHSID’s Korean parents because they do not speak either English or Chinese and do not have chances to understand what is happening currently in SHSID. “Korean Translation” is a newly created service learning team, which is composed of 10 Korean students who volunteer to translate SHSID’s English & Chinese news into Korean so that more Korean parents will be able to understand more about SHSID.

SHSID’s IB & AP were the first article the team members chose to translate because many parents wanted to know about it, but were having trouble understanding the articles written in English or Chinese. The description of SHSID’s Primary School and Middle School, posted on October 8th, was the second article the team members chose to translate. The third news article the team chose to translate was about outstanding IB juniors’ sharing of their study experiences. After the translated versions were posted, the Korean Translation team received a lot of positive comments from the parents, saying that it was really helpful for them and wished them to continue posting more in the future.

The “Korean Translation” service learning program not only helped the Korean parents get rid of their language barriers, but also successfully helped the team members enhance their writing skills and usage of vocabulary.
