SHSID Foreign Teachers Look Forward for the 2016 School Year--Teachers Enthusiastic to Start!

The teachers of SHSID had training and orientation from August 24th to August 31st. Over the course of a week and a half, new teachers met with returning educators to cover teaching policies, school culture, and prepare lessons together. Here is what they had to say:

I was really impressed with the depth of the curriculum training, as well as how helpful all the veteran teachers are,” said Tyler Clayton, a new high school English teacher at SHSID.

Many new teachers flew from the other side of the globe to teach at SHSID.

“Orientation was a fantastic way to get familiar with our new school and the tradition that lives with SHSID. Not only were we becoming a member of this amazing school but we were also becoming a new member of this amazing family. It was an exciting and memorable way to start our teaching journey here in Shanghai,” said Amanda Hammack, a new high school history teacher from Texas, USA.

Returning teachers and facilitators also found the workshop successful. Many returning teachers dedicated time and effort to lending their knowledge to new teachers at SHSID, to inform them of school policies, methods, and culture.

“This has been the best orientation yet. While it is still, obviously, stressful for the new teachers, they have not only weathered the storm but had enough energy to participate in the workshops,” said Max Slonim, a returning high school AP and IB teacher and presenter for the workshop. “The workshop leaders were pushed to their best by such enthusiasm, and many of those who were not actually leading orientation still took an active role in getting 2016 off to a strong start. We have a great buzz among faculty, and are looking forward to the best year yet!”

Teachers attended sessions for eight straight days, and while acknowledging that the event was hard work, teachers expressed that the training was crucial to prepare for a successful school year.

“While orientation at times can be a roller coaster, the ride is always worth it,” said Casey Heiar, primary school teacher.
