2026 High School Sports Meet and Sports Week

The sports feast that the students had been eagerly anticipating arrived as scheduled in October. As part of the series of activities for Sports Week and a warm-up for the Sports Meet, preliminary competitions including rowing and cheerleading had already kicked off enthusiastically starting October 9 in the atrium of Zhongxing Building and in front of Xianmian Building. The competition areas were filled with the students' great enthusiasm for sports and also showcased the sense of belonging of each class. This series of activities also prepared a rich and diverse range of creative options for all students. These activities broke down the barriers of traditional sports events, providing more varied experiential opportunities for all participants and allowing every student to find a stage that suited them. The activities also encouraged students to step out of the classroom and exercise actively, helping them develop healthier exercise and daily routines at school.

Just after nine in the morning on October 15, stirring melodies cut through the field, as the classes of each high school grade entered the field with the expectation of a competitive day, presenting before the main stand a creative performance unique to their own class. Diverse sports elements, Olympic spirits, traditional Chinese-style sport conceptions and themes of world-renowned universities appeared one after another, as the youths showed boundless creativity and high spirits. Scene after scene of vivid displays, full of vigorous vitality, demonstrated the power of youth and also sounded the prelude to this year's sports meet.

On the main stand, Shanghai High School Principal Feng Zhigang, Shanghai High School Vice Principal and SHSID High School Principal Ma Feng, and SHSID Middle and Primary School Principal Liu Lian, together with the administrative leaders, waved to all the teachers and students and sent warm greetings. Afterwards, the Grade 12 athlete representative swore an oath on behalf of all athletes, while Mr. Chen Zihao from the PE Department made a solemn pledge as the referee representative.

Then, Principal Ma Feng took the stage to deliver a speech. He previewed for the students the rich array of competitive events throughout the day, encouraged everyone to strive hard on the field and to always pursue physical and mental strength in life as well, and led everyone in shouting "Go, Stallions!" Afterwards, Principal Ma officially declared the sports meet open.

During the opening ceremony performance, ASB members, uniformly dressed in crisp black T-shirts, delivered a youthful and energetic dance for the entire audience, brimming with vigor. Right after that, the school cheerleading team, with outstanding teamwork, put on a performance that was highly challenging, drawing thunderous applause and continuous cheers.

After the student performances, the teachers’ program began. The whole performance was themed on Baduanjin and martial arts. In the teachers’ group Baduanjin, the movements unfolded slowly and gracefully, conveying a serene and far-reaching Eastern charm. In the teachers-and-students martial arts display in front of the rostrum, the movements burst forth with power—tumbling, leaping, kicking, and striking—revealing dashing strength and drawing repeated admiring praise from the audience.

At the crack of the starting pistol, the track and field events officially began, and the entire stadium instantly erupted with excitement. Athletes from Grades 9 to 12 gathered at the venue, challenging themselves through running, jumping, and throwing, and showcasing the strength and spirit of youth. On the track, the athletes went all out, sprinting toward the finish line; in the field event areas, the competitors kept adjusting their form and mindset, striving to surpass their own limits. Every start, every leap, and every throw embodied focus, courage, and perseverance. Off the field, classmates’ cheers and applause injected energy into the athletes and filled the entire campus with unity and enthusiasm.

The meaning of competition lies not only in results and rankings, but also in the sporting spirit of daring to challenge and never giving up. Regardless of the final outcome, every athlete who gave their all deserves applause. The track and field events not only showcased the athletic spirit of SHSID students, but also let the spirit of hard work, friendship, and unity shine brightly on the field.
At midday, the Auditorium glowed with lights as the much-anticipated cheerleading final got underway. Teams from each grade that had advanced to the finals took the stage in matching outfits, pom-poms in hand, moving to an upbeat soundtrack. Jumps, turns and arm swings landed in crisp unison, and every confident, smiling face became a highlight of the stage; the audience waved and cheered from below, driving the atmosphere to one peak after another. As the winners from each grade were announced one by one, applause broke out, bringing the energetic showcase to a triumphant close. Over the past month or so, students had honed their movements and formations in their spare time, and through creative choreography and a wholehearted performance, they displayed their class's unity and distinctive spirit—making the competition more than a contest, and a collective statement of who they are beyond the classroom.

In the afternoon, intense competition gave way to a lively carnival. In the gym, teachers and students raced one another in the rowing competition. Outside Zhongxing Building, the games area buzzed with excitement: Chase Tag tested speed and reflexes, Tug of War brought classes together, and Cornhole, Beat the Defender, and Halo Ball drew a steady stream of participants. Darts at the Indoor Tennis Center added to the fun. The basement sports facilities in Zhongxing Building were equally popular. Students took to the ice to enjoy skating, while long lines formed for laser shooting. Here, winning took a back seat to friendship and shared joy—rivals in competition, close friends beyond it.

Along the campus walkways, charity stalls bustled with activity. Student clubs offered an array of thoughtfully designed merchandise, with all proceeds going to charitable causes. Laughter filled the afternoon air as the thrill of competition met the warmth of giving. Beaming smiles captured cherished memories of youth, spreading kindness to every corner of campus.

In the afternoon, teacher–student games brought fresh excitement to campus, with basketball, volleyball, football, and dodgeball taking center stage. Stepping away from the classroom and onto the court or field, teachers faced off against students in friendly competition. Coordinated teamwork and spirited play drew cheers from the sidelines. Beyond showcasing their athletic skills, the games brought teachers and students closer together, adding energy and warmth to Sports Day.

The eagerly awaited Charity Run followed on the main field. In the lead-up to the event, students had voted through charitable donations to select the teachers who would take part. As the chosen teachers lined up on the track, students cheered them on from both sides. More than just a race, the event brought sport and charity together, spreading kindness across campus with every stride.

As the final event of the day’s sports meet, the much-anticipated 4×100-meter relay brought the atmosphere to a climax. At the sound of the starting gun, the athletes sprinted off with all their strength, completing handoff after handoff at full speed, condensing speed and tacit understanding into the baton.

The baton was passed from hand to hand again and again, carrying trust and chemistry, and conveying each runner’s determination to win honor for their class. Along both sides of the track, cheers and applause rose and fell, injecting strength into every sprint.

The moment they crossed the finish line, sweat and cheers intertwined, and effort and joy were frozen together on the field. The brilliance of the relay lies not only in the contest of speed, but also in the trust in every baton pass, the perseverance in every leg of the run, and the strength united by the whole class. With their rapport, they connected with one another. In chasing and overtaking one another, they displayed the sharpness of youth and let the sporting spirit of unity and teamwork shine brightly on the field. This contest of speed and collaboration brought the day’s events to an inspiring close.
