World Languages: Peers Sharing Third Language Acquisition Experiences

During lunchtime on March 25 and 26, some language enthusiast seniors visited Zhentao Building to share their experiences of learning a third language with ninth and tenth-grade students. These seniors not only helped the younger students understand the cultural significance of different languages but also gave them useful advice on learning languages.

On March 25, during the Japanese session, Adeline used Japanese characters to start the presentation and showed how Japanese and Chinese cultures are similar. She shared funny stories from class, especially about the unique manga style in Japanese textbooks, making the audience feel like they were in a fun classroom. Adeline also shared tips on how to combine language learning with personal interests, giving her peers valuable advice.

The Spanish session on March 26 was even more exciting. Four seniors talked enthusiastically about their journey learning Spanish in high school. They mentioned that Spanish is the second most spoken language globally and talked about famous places to visit in Spanish-speaking countries, like the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. They also discussed the culture of Latin American countries and shared their experiences of starting a Latin American society. The session ended with a quiz about Spanish-speaking countries, with students eagerly participating and even getting to taste Spanish food for correct answers.

The seniors not only shared their language learning experiences but also talked about their enjoyment of participating in language clubs and events like MIX Day. They said these activities enriched their school lives, broadened their horizons, and improved their language skills through interacting with different cultures. They hoped that more students will join in learning multiple languages and explore the benefits it brings.
