Grade 12 Assembly: Intro of the Filmist Club
On the morning of March 8, the senior students gathered for their routine morning assembly in the Xianmian Annex Auditorium. Jessie, leader of the Filmist Club and a movie enthusiast, presented to her classmates a new selection of interesting movies.
Jessie recommended a range of movies from different genres and time periods. She suggested some classics like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), a movie about three men competing to be the first to find a treasure in the American Southwest, and Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), which discusses the Cold War. She also recommended some modern narratives like Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019).
Besides movies directed in America, she also introduced foreign films like Le Trou (1960), where four prison inmates try to dig their way outside of prison while trying to decide whether or not to trust their new inmate; Army of Shadows (1969), a movie that discusses the battles of underground resistance groups under an atmosphere of tension, paranoia, and distrust; and La Haine (1995), where three young men wander around the suburbs of Paris as they wait for the news of the state of health of their mutual friend. Finally, she sparked curiosity among the students by mentioning the movie Maestro (2023), which presents the lifelong relationship between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn-Bernstein, and advising against it.
Through these movies, Jessie encourages students to explore cinema beyond Hollywood, because watching these movies can help them gain insight into diverse cultures and perspectives. Her presentation, filled with engaging summaries and thoughtful reflections on many quality works, was met with applause and sparked renewed interest in film among the students. This initiative not only enriched the cultural tapestry of the school but also opened a dialogue on the significance of movies in the understanding of complex societal themes.
