Grade 12 Assembly: Bird Collision Investigation
On March 1, senior Sophia Yang introduced her club “SHSID Nature” during the assembly with the topic of “Bird Collision Investigation”. Sophia started by introducing the term “bird strikes”, also known as Bird-Window Collision, and how this contributed to billions of bird deaths.
After the informative explanation of bird strikes and their damage to the bird population, Sophia prompted the audience to think about the consequences and calls to action they could take to protect the birds. A major issue is the lack of data dedicated to the occurrence of bird strikes even in metropolises in China. To address this issue, Sophia believes that students should start by caring about the SHSID campus. Students in the club will investigate the nearby area around the Zhentao Building and take at least three detailed pictures of the surrounding plant and animal life. These pictures will contribute to the campus Biodiversity Journal project. Next, when students discover bird strikes, especially around the ZTB corridor, they should immediately report their findings in the group chat to allow the teachers to handle such updates professionally. At last, she shared her records and mathematical analyses the club had conducted in the past.
At the end of the presentation, Sophia welcomed anyone interested in birds to share their experiences and join her. Not only will the students be helping a global issue, but they can also receive certificates that validate their contributions and hard work. She aims to spread students’ passion for nature and determination to reduce the amount of bird strikes among students.
