Puxi Campus G1: Celebrating the Lantern Festival

February 23, 2024

The joyous Lantern Festival brought a wonderful Chinese language feast to the first graders. On this special holiday, they participated in a lantern riddle guessing activity full of wisdom and excitement, as well as a hands-on handicraft activity with a“dragon” theme.

For this activity, each first grader prepared a carefully designed riddle. Some riddles were clever, some were full of childlike wonder, some were easy to solve, and some were mind-boggling. Some head-scratching examples include: Subtract one from one hundred and you get“white”, no rain for a long time is a“field”, and the moon in ancient times is known as“bright”. Each child eagerly awaited the moment when their lantern riddle would be solved, with sparks of wisdom constantly bursting in the classroom.

These riddle games contain rich traditional cultural elements. Each riddle is carefully designed, combining fun and cultural significance. Through guessing riddles, the children not only learn Chinese characters and appreciate their cleverness, but also understand the wisdom and humor of our ancestors.

This year’s Lantern Festival was especially special because it coincided with the Year of the Dragon. Teachers prepared a hands-on activity about dragons to help the children deepen their understanding of dragon culture. The children not only learned blessing phrases related to dragons but also got to handcraft their favorite dragons. By folding and pasting shapes on colored paper, a lively“dragon” was completed. The children waved the dragons they made, saying auspicious phrases like“soaring like a dragon”and“vigor as a dragon and horse”. It was a picture full of the festive atmosphere.

Through this activity, the first graders not only spent a Lantern Festival filled with laughter and challenges but also sparked their interest and love for the Chinese language subject. By guessing lantern riddles and making handicrafts, they exercised their imagination and hands-on abilities, while also demonstrating their mastery and application of the Chinese language.
