History Department: Grade 6 History Project Exhibition

January 8, 2024

Studying ancient Egypt in grade 6 is an engaging and educational experience that allows students to delve into the rich history and culture of one of the world's oldest civilizations. Through this unit, students explore various aspects of ancient Egyptian society, such as their remarkable achievements in architecture, art, religion, and governance. By examining artifacts, hieroglyphics, and historical accounts, students gain a deeper understanding of the Nile River's significance, the pharaohs' rule, the construction of pyramids, and their belief in the afterlife.

As part of their formative assessment, students had to complete a special research project on ancient Egypt. In that project, our students had the opportunity to construct an Egyptian tomb, showcasing their understanding of the culture and traditions of this fascinating civilization. These tombs could be hand drawn on paper or constructed using materials such as clay. Some students even used 3D printing to help construct their tomb and its surrounding features.

The tombs represented a tribute to their self-created pharaoh, with details reflecting the grandeur and power associated with their rule. Students carefully designed and created monuments and statues that symbolized the pharaoh's authority and divine status. Hieroglyphics, the ancient Egyptian writing system, adorned the walls, depicting stories, prayers, and historical events. To further enhance the authenticity of the tomb, students carefully selected some treasures that represent the wealth and opulence of ancient Egypt, such as jewelry, pottery, or precious artifacts. Additionally, a book of the dead, containing 3 useful student created spells was included. This was to highlight the belief in the afterlife and provide insights into the rituals and practices associated with death and the journey to the underworld. Throughout this project, students not only gained a hands-on understanding of ancient Egyptian culture but also developed skills in research, creativity, and attention to detail.

During the class project gallery walk, students had the opportunity to vote for their favorite projects across a variety of categories. The best designers of each class were honored with the "Project Star of December", rewarding their efforts and creativity! Some examples of the best projects are displayed in the corridors of the sixth grade floor, and everyone is welcomed to come and appreciate them!
