Puxi Camplus G2 | Chinese Charater Assembling Competition: Second Graders Shine with Nearly a Hundred Characters on Display
This month, the second-grade students at the SHSID Puxi Campus engaged in a spirited spelling competition during their Chinese Show & Tell class.
The children were divided into groups, with each group receiving 100 common Chinese character components, all derived from the new characters they had learned during the semester. Within a specified time frame, the students were tasked with assembling as many compound characters as possible and recording them on a poster.
The competition began. Children spontaneously organized themselves, taking on different roles within their groups. Some were responsible for finding components, others for assembling characters, and some for recording and checking. Throughout the classrooms, one could witness children eagerly searching for components in a sea of characters. Excited voices could be heard saying, "I formed '沿' (along),'井沿' (well edge) has '沿'!" or "This is '顶' (top), '头顶' (head top) has '顶'!" Once they successfully assembled a character, they quickly approached the recorders to ensure their accomplishments were documented.
After twenty minutes of intense competition, the children were amazed to discover that their collaborative efforts had resulted in nearly a hundred recorded Chinese characters on the poster. Cheers erupted as everyone celebrated their hard work.
This Chinese activity was not just an engaging game but also an opportunity for reflection and review as the semester came to the end. Teachers sincerely hoped that through this experience, our students would gain a deeper understanding of the structural principles of Chinese characters and personally feel the charm of the language.
