Puxi Campus G8 | The Academy Awards for Students—BEDDS Film Festival

December 27, 2023

The G8 students celebrated their own Oscars awards ceremony, the Annual BEDDS Trailer Awards, just before Christmas!

The ceremony took place on the Xianmian Auditorium, on December 18th in two blocks, A and B, with teachers and students attending in their finest attire. A total of nine awards were presented at this film festival, including Best Hair and Makeup, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Sound Mixing, Best Actors, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Director, and Best Picture. Teachers took the stage to introduce each award, and as the winners were announced, the audience erupted in cheers and applause. Subsequently, the audience enjoyed the award-winning trailers, and the winning teams shared their acceptance speeches.

In this edition of BEDDS, students were required to create a movie trailer adapted from a science fiction novel. These trailers, lasting two to three minutes, were a product of group collaboration. The outstanding trailers participating in this film festival were selected collectively by the teachers and students from each English class. In the final award competition, each trailer showcased its unique creative ideas and characteristics. The Best Hair and Makeup Award recognized trailers that emphasized the appearance of trailer actors through hairstyling, hairpieces, wigs, or cosmetics. The Best Costume Design award highlighted trailers that conveyed the personality of a character through apparel details. The Best Production Design award was given to trailers that created an exquisite environment for effectively telling the movie's story. The Best Sound Mixing award recognized trailers that blended levels and tonality of sounds, dialogue, sound effects, and music to portray the ambiance of the story. The Best Actors award was for actors who delivered commendable performances in the trailer. The Best Adapted Screenplay award acknowledged films that captured the essence of the original novel while adding a sprinkle of creativity to the adaptation. The Best Film Editing award was for trailers demonstrating thoughtful and imaginative interplay in the arrangement of scenes. The Best Director and Best Picture awards praised the overall excellence of the trailer as envisioned and executed by the director. The award for Best Picture, given by Mr. Laverriere (aka Mr. L), was especially exciting for the students, as it recognized the “absolute best” trailer of the year, judged on the highest cinematic achievements.

After presenting all the awards, students enjoyed winning trailers from previous film festivals. Through this activity, they learned about cinematographic techniques and discovered how to integrate their ideas with those of the original authors, creating a unique form of artistic expression in videos. They gained a deeper understanding of the content learned in English classes and developed friendship and teamwork skills through collaboration. This experience proved both satisfying and enjoyable.
