Middle School Math Department: Phi Phenomenon: Where Mathematics Meets Beauty Rhythm of Columns, Beauty of Mathematics, Love of Art
The 7th-grade students recently completed a project that blurred the lines between arithmetic and art. The project could be compared to a mesmerizing art performance that lead students into the mysterious realm of the Fibonacci series. This math journey was like a symphony, divided into three lively movements.
The initial chapter, which began with a classic example of the Fibonacci series - the rabbit reproduction problem - depicts a different set of mathematical sequences. Traveling through the rhythm of nature's petals, the students discovered the intimate dance between these numbers and the golden ratio. Through trials and tribulations of the problem and the lyricism of the drawings, they grew to appreciate the marvelous beauty of the Fibonacci sequence.
Then, by measuring the proportions of portraits of famous people, students wrote the golden ratio of their faces. Through layers and layers of problem design, they realized the profound significance of mathematics in the search for beauty. In the fluttering of thoughts, the students skillfully created and drew human faces that conformed to the golden ratio, blossoming like works of art.
In the epilogue, learning was integrated into real-life applications. The students worked together to identify and present the Fibonacci series found in everyday life, and its practical beauty, in the form of a team symphony and a video poster.
This math journey was an irrigation of knowledge and a profound cultivation of the students' aesthetic sensibilities. The students gradually realized that mathematics is not just an abstract subject, but also a wonderful creator of art and beauty. They navigated the vast ocean of mathematics by listening to the musical melody of beauty and gradually appreciated the profound and wonderful beauty of mathematics.
