High School Physics Department: Paper Plane Competition

December 11, 2023

From December 5th to December 8th, a highly creative paper airplane competition was successfully held in the Zhentao Building Lecture Hall. Students used their intelligence and imagination to turn ordinary pieces of paper into planes that soared into the sky.

Students formed teams based on their classes and were given one (1) A4-sized sheet of paper from their teachers to create a high-performance paper airplane with good control within a specified time. The students enthusiastically discussed their airplane creation plans, adjusting factors such as the shape of the airplane, the length of the wings, and the angle of the nose based on their understanding of aerodynamics to achieve a longer flight distance and more controlled landing.

The competition was organized by Ms. Yao Yanjie, the head teacher of the 9th-grade physics group, and volunteers. During the exciting competition breaks, Ms. Yao taught students about aerodynamics, making them more aware of the importance of the proper application of physics to successfully create their paper airplanes. The paper airplanes created by each group were different in shape and each had its own strengths. "Pilots" threw their planes as hard as they could, with some planes flying very far and others showing amazing control. They all won applause from their classmates.

At the end of the competition, in addition to selecting outstanding airplanes based on standards, there was also a trick event called "Paper Plane Pitch Pot". In this round, students needed to accurately throw their paper airplanes into a target object in the distance, which not only tested their throwing technique and understanding of aerodynamics but also allowed them to experience the fun of the traditional Chinese game "Pitch Pot".

The exciting and successful competition integrated learning and teaching with fun and hands-on practice. It not only enriched the students' overall learning experience at school, but also further stimulated their interest and love for the subject of physics.
