Puxi G6 | Autumn Tour: Exploring the Mysteries of the Universe at the Planetarium

December 7, 2023

Last week, SHSID’s grade 6 students journeyed to the Shanghai Planetarium for an in-depth scientific exploration trip. This activity aimed to stimulate students' interest with hands-on experiences in astronomy, encouraging them to ponder scientific horizons and the wonders of the universe.

The Shanghai Planetarium fascinated the students with its unique architectural style, engaging exhibition content, and participation in various interactive experience programs and science activities. They first visited the "Home" exhibition hall, where they passed through a tunnel into what seemed like a distant planet. The surrounding walls and floors were glittering with stars, giving them the impression of being far away in the universe. The huge "Earth" in the center of the exhibition hall was suspended in space, and the continents and oceans projected onto the sphere gave them a new understanding of the beauty of our home planet.

In the "Universe" exhibition area, students learned about the marvelous phenomena of the universe with panoramics view from the five dimensions of space-time, light, gravity, elements and life. They explored the laws of evolution and operation of celestial bodies through many interactive exhibits. Students had the opportunity to touch the isotropic operation instruments upon entering the "Tian He" core module model and were able to compare the astronauts' activity area sizes in the core module and feel what it would really be like in outer space.

In Hall B, they experienced programs such as star slides, building craters and astronauts taking photos. These novel experiences evoked even more curiosity and interest in astronomy. The teachers also designed a related knowledge quiz specifically for this field trip, leading students to internalize and reinforce astronomical knowledge while simultaneously providing the opportunity to engage in play and social activities with all their peers.

After the visit, the students expressed that they experienced a fulfilling learning and development process. They not only increased their astronomical knowledge, but also enhanced their interest in and knowledge of science. They said that the visit gave them a deeper understanding of the universe.

This experiential way of learning gave them a more intuitive and in-depth understanding of astronomy, and lit a bright light for a plethora of future scientists.
