High School Biology Department: Biology House Lectures

December 6, 2023

To satisfy the students’ desire for knowledge and to guide them to explore in a scientific way, SHSID high school teachers actively take on the role of school House Mentors and organize House activities on different topics based on their own professional strengths. Through lectures, visits, interactions, and other forms, teachers cultivate students' interests and their potential. Recently, three biology teachers organized a series of lectures for biology enthusiasts.

On November 10th, Ms. Yuan Yamin gave a lecture on "How to Read Scientific Papers" to students in the Zhentao Building’s Room 213, aiming to help students master the skills of reading scientific papers and improve their exploratory abilities in the field of life sciences. Ms. Yuan first explained the format of scientific papers and demonstrated the databases for obtaining scientific papers and how to use them. At the same time, based on her own research experience, Ms. Yuan also gave the students suggestions on how to read papers efficiently. The lecture was full of useful information, and the students expressed that they had gained a lot from it.

Biodiversity is one of the concerns of biology teaching. In order to cultivate students’ ability to observe and describe organisms around them scientifically as well as create a beautiful and harmonious Earth, Ms. Zhang Chenglei hosted the PA lecture on “Pets in Our Daily Life – Hermit Crabs, Birds, and Cats” on November 15 also in the Zhentao Building’s Room 213. Ms. Zhang invited two students who were very knowledgeable in animal raising to share their lovely stories about their experiences with pets. With their unique perspectives and vivid language, the two lecturers led students into the magical world of animals. They showed the daily life of hermit crabs, pet cats, and pet parrots, with illustrations and detailed explanations of the habits and raising tips of the different animals, and the appearance of the hermit crabs and parrots on the scene aroused great interest amongst the students.

As medicine and biology are closely related, to lead students to explore the intersection of Chinese and Western cultures from a biological perspective and to broaden their academic horizons, on November 30th, Ms. Li Yongchi gave a lecture on "Plants in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western Medicine" in the recording classroom of the Zhentao Building, using plants as the point to explore the characteristics and connections between Chinese and Western medicine. Ms. Li introduced the classic Chinese medicine monographs "Shennong's Classic of Material Medical" and "Compendium of Materia Medica", and then combined them with physical demonstrations to show students the wisdom of the ancients in the process of studying the medicinal properties of plants. Subsequently, Ms. Li also introduced the process of drug research in Western medicine, and compared the different theoretical systems and research contents under the perspectives of Chinese and Western medicine with perilla and ginseng as examples. At the end of the lecture, Ms. Li played the video of Ms. Tu Youyou's extraction of artemisinin for the students, which gave them a more intuitive feeling of the medical research in the fusion of Chinese and Western medicine, and expected that, under the encouragement of the outstanding scientific research predecessors, the students would be able to explore more positively and solve the realistic problems we face today.

It is believed that students have gained a lot from this series of lectures, and the biology teachers will continue to make efforts to stimulate students' curiosity and desire to explore from various directions and fields, focusing on their aspirations and guiding them to ride the waves in the ocean of biology.
