Grade 11 Assembly: Chess & Life

December 5, 2023

On the last day of November, Grade-11 students had their assembly with an introduction to the upcoming Christmas events and the board game chess. This year’s “Secret Santa” gift-giving campaign consisted of a Christmas sale and “white elephant” gift exchange. The Christmas sale allows students to purchase unique Christmas decorations and gifts, with the revenue raised going to donations/charity. The white elephant gift exchange is a creative gift-exchanging event where students prepare a gift with the prompt to “bring something that represents yourself” while receiving a gift from someone else.

Next, Jason from class 11(6) delivered a presentation on chess. The speech began with a brief introduction, interesting facts, and the benefits of playing chess. Key details about chess included how it was a game that only required skill and no luck, and how scientific research supported its benefits of fostering creativity and critical-thinking skills. Then, the story of a personal tournament experience wrapped up the assembly with the conclusion that chess taught him the important life lessons of perseverance, seeing the bigger picture, and learning from losses.
