2023 Math Drama "Mr. Kepler's Propositions" is Coming
After the first attempt at a math drama in 2022, students from the Shanghai High School International Division will once again take the stage to present a brand-new masterpiece titled "Mr. Kepler's Propositions". Mr. Kepler once said, "Geometry has two great treasures: one is the theorem of Pythagoras, the other the division of a line into extreme and mean ratios. The first we may compare to a mass of gold, the second we may call a precious jewel." In the Western world, Euclid, with the clear thinking of ancient Greece, eternalized the Pythagorean theorem in his work "Elements of Geometry." In the East, mathematicians Zhao Shuang and Liu Hui, holding the "Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art", painted the legendary story of the Pythagorean theorem in the mathematical hall of China. With a passion for mathematics and an unwavering desire to explore, the SHSID students will interpret this mathematical drama themed around the Pythagorean theorem – "Mr. Kepler's Propositions". From an international perspective, they will follow the footsteps of the Pythagorean theorem and the golden ratio's principles, compare Western and Chinese mathematics, and showcase the remarkable discoveries of ancient Chinese mathematics.
The performance of "Mr. Kepler's Propositions" is not only a renewed exploration of mathematical drama by our students but also a continuous innovative endeavor in the interdisciplinary field. During rehearsals, the students diligently studied the script, immersed themselves in their roles, and received professional guidance from our school's math teachers, who helped them interpret and analyze the specialized knowledge within the script. After intense preparations, the play will be performed at Shanghai High School's Blackbox Theater on December 7th (Thursday) at 17:00, exclusively for faculty and students from SHSID. Simultaneously, the performance will be live-streamed, sharing this creatively rich feast of visuals and thoughts with audiences both inside and outside the school. We welcome everyone to appreciate together the charm and power of mathematics, and to experience the beauty of Chinese mathematics.
Special Thanks
This event is hosted by the Chinese Society of Mathematical Education, and adopts the "one play, three performances" mode to promote mathematics and cultural education outreach through "offline performances + online live streaming". The three performances are presented by the School of Mathematical Sciences, East China Normal University, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Practice, Shanghai High School International Division, and Junior Middle School of No.2 High School Affiliated to East China Normal University. The first performance was held at East China Normal University on November 11th, 2023, and the performance at Shanghai High School International Division will be the second.
