History and Geography Department: Interpreting the Nature of War from Multiple Perspectives

November 29, 2023

In late November, Mr. Jordan Jamison gave an AP U.S. history lesson to Grade 11 students with the topic of the War of 1812 and used document analysis as the main teaching method.

He started from a number of questions, such as: How might the War of 1812 validate Washington’s Farewell Address? (Conversely, how might it have invalidated Washington’s warning of factionalism or entangling foreign alliances?); then he introduced two ways of document analysis, ESP and HIPPY, and guided students to annotate their documents from different perspectives. The entire lesson was well-organized and helped students engage in reasoned inquiry that led to conclusions.
