Grades 9-12: 2023 English Speech Competition Successfully Held
On Wednesday, November 22, SHSID’s High School annual English Speech Competitions were held in the Grand Auditorium and Xianmian Annex Auditorium.
This year’s competition, themed “Memory”, witnessed the active participation of students through creating unique works based upon interesting experiences in their elementary years. Following careful screening by the High School English teachers, the final participants successfully advanced to the stage. With memories filling their minds, they stepped under the spotlight and shared their most treasured stories with the audience.
Grade-9 and -10 contestants used vivid language and rich emotions to describe their unforgettable childhood memories. One contestant shared the terrifying experience of accidentally swallowing bubble gum. There was also a contestant who told an inspiring speech about growth through facing and overcoming difficulties. Some recalled their first encounter with their best friends; others shared stories of how they developed a bond with their hobbies. Each of the speeches took the audience on imaginative and immersive journeys, sometimes triggering bursts of laughter, and at other times, leaving the audience in deep thought about the past and the future.
The participants of Grades 11 and 12 expressed remembrances towards their childhood memories not only through their descriptive speeches, but also through their light-hearted humour, vivid recollections of granular details, encounters with unexpected and unfamiliar circumstances, and emotional ties that shared a fondness to twist the dials of time back to the past. Although each participant was given a mere four minutes to revisit their past, they managed to present their stories to the audience and the judges as if the event had only occurred yesterday.
On this particular Wednesday in November, a seemingly orthodox school day was transformed into a magical experience, where the past intertwined with the present in front of a crowd echoing cheers, cries, and thoughtful consideration. We thank all student participants, ASB members, and English teachers working behind the scenes for making the event such a success. With another year of outstanding speeches being made, we are already excited about the unlimited possibility that the future stories will bring.
