Puxi Campus G7-8 | 2023 SHAMUN

November 23, 2023

From November 17th to November 19th, 31 seventh and eighth grade students from SHSID attended the SHASMUN XI. This year's theme was "The Footnote of History," introduced by Mr. Ben Elmakias and the student secretary general at the opening ceremony. History is like a magnificent epic. Those unsung heroes who have made contributions but are often overlooked, existed in the subtle footnotes of this grand narrative. This conference's topic enabled students to recognize those who are only found in the footnotes, and allowed them to act and participate as one of them.

At this conference, there were a variety of committees and topics, ranging from speech in UNESCO (Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) to the global water crisis. Within these specific international issues, the students engaged in discussions. The students worked on both independent and collaborative skills to come up with solutions to international problems. In total, we had 6 main submitters: Jennifer from 8-4, Cici from 8-5, Rachael from 8-12, Melonie from 8-13, Eugenie from 8-13, and Sophie from 8-6. They have all worked tirelessly to write their proposals, co-ordinated the input of their group members, and ultimately delivered the presentations.

The students who participated in the event received a welcome and valuable honor. Four delegates earned honorable mentions in their committees: Oscar from 7-7, Camellia from 8-5, Cici from 8-5, and Eugenie from 8-13. Finally, congratulations to our two award winning delegates: Sunny from 7-1 and Echo from 7-9, chosen as the most improved delegates. Even with their young age and limited experience in Model United Nations, they still performed outstandingly and received high remarks and praise from their respective chairs.

Over the course of three days, these students participated actively in their committees crafting their resolutions, raising POIs (point of information), presenting speeches, and passing amendments. From this experience, the students strengthened their abilities of critical thinking, cooperation and leadership, inquiry and research, originality, and digital literacy. Moreover, their in-depth discussions made them more aware of how to become global citizens.
