Puxi G6: The Tug of War Competition

November 22, 2023

“Come on! Come on!"

It was bustling on the lawn next to the Zhongxing Building as our Grade 6 classmates held a tug of war competition during Thursday afternoon's YD class.

A long hemp rope as thick and long as a python with a bright red rope tied in the middle caught our eyes as soon as we entered the competition area. Grade head teacher and director, Miss Shen Ying, advised everyone to be prepared well ahead of time. The children were all tightly holding onto the rope with both hands, ensuring that the rope would not escape their fingertips. Their feet were firmly planted on the ground, and their bodies leaned back ready to release the full force of their might. With a whistle, the game began!

Both teams were desperately tugging at the rope in their given opposite direction, faces flushed with tension, clenched teeth and tightened expressions, exerting all their strength. The middle of the hemp rope moves left and right, to and fro like a pendulum balance beam- each individual's effort unwilling to give way or show weakness. The cheerleaders from both sides also shouted in unison, "Come on! Come on..." The homeroom teachers also rhythmically waved their arms and shouted, "Come on! Hold on! You're the best! Come on!" The teacher's encouragement seemed to give the children infinite, inexhaustible strength. "One... Two... Three!" After everyone's concerted efforts in unison, the red rope finally slowly moved to one side, and with the referee's whistle, the game ended with one side emerging victorious. “Yeah! We won!" Some of the students in the winning class applauded each other, some cheered, some hugged tightly together, and the face of the class teacher was also filled with a bright smile.

Game after game, the children kept cheering and shouting, each cathartic conclusion followed by another. Even if students shout until their voices are hoarse and their palms are red and numb, they cannot express their joy and excitement in their hearts. It is the thrill of positive competition that motivates them. The victorious team members danced with joy, while the unsuccessful team members may be disheartened, but fulfilled with lifelong learning lessons nonetheless.

The tug of war competition came to a perfect conclusion at the end of the final class bell, and the children also realized a truth: only by uniting and working together can we overcome the most relentless difficulties of life.
