G8 | Puxi Campus: YD - Self-Concept

November 17, 2023

Students face various stressors and pressures from peers, family, and society within modern educational systems. The ability to objectively view and reflect on oneself is a crucial skill. In the recent YD lesson, 8th-grade students were given the opportunity to reflect on themselves using their own self-esteem, and were taught methods to build self-esteem in a healthy way.

The lesson began with teachers initiating an inspirational discussion. Students were tasked with answering the question "Who am I?" in 20 different ways. Through this discussion, the teacher guided students to reflect on themselves objectively.

Following that, students were introduced to the correct definitions of self-concept and its three main components. Simultaneously, teachers encouraged students to contemplate what, why, and how a person's self-image might be influenced, fostering discussions about whether these influences could be positive or negative.

For the second activity of the lesson, students were presented with the Harrill Self-Esteem Inventory, which further encouraged them to reflect on themselves.

To conclude the YD lesson, the final activity involved watching a TED Talk video titled “You aren’t at the mercy of your emotions, your brain creates them.” The video provided a detailed explanation of the relationship between the human mind and human emotion, offering educational suggestions on how students can better manage their moods and emotions.

Through this engaging lesson, 8th-grade students enhanced their understanding of self-concept and acquired new methods to build higher self-esteem. These skills will undoubtedly prove valuable throughout the remainder of their school lives and in their careers as lifelong global citizens.
