First Grade in Puxi: Fun Pinyin Hats

October 23, 2023

The first-grade students are still on their journey through the “Pinyin Kingdom”. They have visited the Vowel Village, made many friends with single vowels, and went to the Initial Consonant Park to play with initial consonants. While playing and having fun, they have also been learning how to spell syllables, including whole-syllables. This week, the first-grade students reinforce their whole-syllables by making Pinyin hats.

Each student receives a different whole-syllable card. They first put the tone hat on top of the syllable, and then match a word to the syllable and draw it. For example, “zhī” becomes a spider busy spinning its web, “yú” becomes a fish blowing bubbles in the water, “chì” becomes angel wings, “sī” becomes silk thread spun by a silkworm, and “wū” becomes a slow-moving turtle. The interesting syllable drawings come to life under their pens. Once the syllable drawings are finished, the main part of the hat is complete. Then, they cut it out, attach two straps on the left and right sides, and adjust them according to their head size. There you have it! A Pinyin hat. Putting on the Pinyin hats, each student becomes a member of the Pinyin Kingdom.

Mastering Pinyin helps the students speak standard Mandarin, read more interesting storybooks, and make better use of dictionary tools. Various activities make Pinyin learning more enjoyable and memorable. The students not only put their hands to work but also deepen their friendship with the “Pinyin friends” through this activity.
