A Visit to the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute

October 23, 2023

On the afternoon of October 20, 2023, 22 students from G9 to G12 of SHSID visited the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute in Pudong New District. SciLab, a G10 STEM club of SHSID, contacted the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute and organized this visit. It aims to help students learn about scientific research in the fields of physics and astronomy, as well as promote their interest in science.

Proposed by the Nobel laureate Tsung-Dao Lee and with support and endorsement from governments and ministries at national and municipal levels, the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) is a basic research institute established at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in November 2016, aiming to build itself as a world-leading science institute. Resonating with Professor Lee’s vision, the Institute focuses on the most fundamental science questions and conducts cutting-edge research in physics and astronomy in an effort to shed light on the relationship between the maximum and the minimum in the universe, and the most fundamental and profound laws of interaction in nature.

After arriving at the institute, Mr. Li Sheng presented the background story of the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute. The students learned about the institute’s history and the main research fields of the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute. Moreover, he introduced the scientific research map of the facilities at the institute nationwide, including the PandaX dark matter and Neutrino detector facilities at Sichuan province, China.

After the introduction, the students went to the Dark Matter Laboratory. Mr. Li showed what dark matter is, and then explained the ongoing PandaX project of Shanghai Jiao Tong University so that the students could gain some understanding of the development in that field as well as the recent progress of dark matter.

Afterwards, the students visited the Neutrino Lab. There, they learned about the Tropical Deep-sea Neutrino Telescope (TRIDENT), an envisioned neutrino observatory in the South China Sea. Meanwhile, the teacher showed the composition and arrangement of the neutrino telescope. After the introduction, the students had an overview of neutrinos and related research projects.

On the second floor of the Muon Lab, the students learned the basics about muons and their application. Through the professor's patient explanation and on-site experimental demonstration, the students had some understanding of the academic research progress related to muons and further deepened their understanding of the field through the Q-and-A exchange with the professor.

Finally, the students went to the public computing platform "Siyuan No. 1" at the Yang Yuanqing Scientific Computing Center, where Mr. Li introduced information about black holes, and the students learned about other various aspects of black holes.

At five o'clock in the afternoon, this visit came to an end. The education of frontier science is one of the platforms set up by SHSlD. Learning outside the classroom expands the "classroom" to extracurricular fun and learning. It not only gives the students the chance to gain more knowledge about physics and astronomy, but also enhances their understanding of scientific research work and broadens their visions. At the same time, they saw the development of China’s frontier field of studies. We hope that in the near future, they can go further on the road of exploring science and the vastness of space!
