High School Physics Department: Open Class – Investigation of the Relationship between the Terminal Velocity of a Small Sphere in a Liquid and the Diameter of the Sphere
On the morning of October 16, 2023, Ms. Yao Yanjie from Physics Department held an open class at Yifu Building 211, leading the Grade 11 IB students to explore the relationship between the terminal velocity and the diameter of a sphere in a liquid by doing an experiment. The topic of this class was one of the new knowledge points added to the IB syllabus, and it will be taught for the first time this semester. Several teachers from various subject department and visitors from the Mahidol Wittayanusorn School in Thailand came to observe the open class.
At the beginning of the class, Ms. Yao led the students to review the content related to drag force learned in the last class, invited the students to analyze the results of the pilot experiment of the last class in the form of a group presentation, and made clear the goal of this class and the experimental data needed to be collected. Subsequently, students worked in small groups to make qualitative observations, collect and record quantitative data, and conduct final data processing. The teachers and students of the Thai visiting group also went to one experimental group after another with great interest to participate in exchanges and discussions. At the same time, other teachers were watching the open class in the next-door classroom through the video broadcast screen while having a synchronous discussion. Finally, under the guidance of Ms. Yao, the students tried to find the relationship between the final velocity and the diameter by graphing, compared the results through theoretical derivation, and finally got the relationship between the final velocity and the diameter of the sphere. In the next physics class, Ms. Yao will continue to lead the students to conduct a systematic evaluation of this experiment.
Ms. Yao's physics lesson had clear teaching objectives and reasonable design, which conform to the curriculum standards and teaching concepts of the new IB syllabus. In the teaching process, Ms. Yao focused on inspiring students, guiding students to think positively, and creating opportunities for students to show themselves, such as group reporting and analysis of experimental results. At the same time, the open class also provided teachers an opportunity to exchange ideas about the learning and teaching processes, which was praised by the teachers on the whole.
