Popular Science Lecture: Ahead, Nuclear Energy!

October 18, 2023

On the afternoon of October 16, 2023, several experts from the Shanghai Institute of Nuclear Technology were invited to Shanghai High School International Division (SHSID) and gave the students an interesting lecture on nuclear physics - Ahead, Nuclear Energy. This lecture attracted many physics enthusiasts from Grades 9-12 in high school. High School Vice Principal Zhang Li, High School Assistant Principal Liu Qin, Director of High School Science & Technology Liao Hui, and Head of the High School Physics Department Xu Zhencheng also attended the lecture. With their profound expertise and vivid language, the experts of the Institute showed the teachers and students the wonderful world of nuclear energy.

Lecturer Wang Xujia, professor-level senior engineer, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Institute of Nuclear Technology, introduced the power of nuclear energy and its important strategic position for national development from the successful introduction of our country's first atomic bomb explosion 59 years ago. The mass-energy equation, which explains the source of energy, and the three types of nuclear reactions were then introduced. Mr. Wang pointed out that the principle of nuclear reaction seems simple, but the preparation of nuclear fuel is not easy. His detailed analysis of the difficulties of using nuclear energy in practical processes caused students to marvel.

Then, Mr. Wang introduced the basic principles and safety development of nuclear power plants. Three major nuclear accidents in history show that the use of nuclear energy has been moving forward in twists and turns. As the world's largest nuclear power installation country, China has always implemented the safe and orderly development of nuclear power and promoted the construction of nuclear power projects in an orderly manner on the premise of ensuring safety.

Afterwards, as a nuclear energy worker, Mr. Wang talked about some thoughts on the use of nuclear energy by human beings and encouraged the students to actively explore the frontier of science and technology, bravely pursue scientific dreams, fully explore their own potential, and contribute their own strengths to the development of science and technology.

After the lecture, the students were still interested and asked questions to the guests. From nuclear reaction devices and the selection of nuclear fuel to the international situation under the influence of nuclear energy, the students' questions covered a wide range and high quality, so much so that the experts present repeatedly praised. The experts carefully answered the students' questions, and once again, encouraged everyone to study hard to gain scientific knowledge, grow into the new force of China's science and technology cause, and promote the continuous development of science and technology.

Finally, the experts from the Nuclear Engineering Institute presented the model of "Passive Nuclear Power Plant CAP 1400" as a gift to SHSID. High School Vice Principal Zhang Li and High School Assistant Principal Liu Qin, on behalf of SHSID, returned the "Scroll of the Longmen Building of Shanghai High School" to the Nuclear Engineering Institute. In the midst of laughter, experts from the Nuclear Engineering Institute visited the campus under the warm invitation of teachers and students.

The success of this event shows the determination and efforts of SHSID in providing students with diversified and in-depth science education. It not only enables students to broaden their scientific horizons, but also enhances their cognition and expectations for the future development of science and technology. The International Department of Shanghai High School is constantly committed to providing students with quality educational resources and broadening their international horizons. In the future, the International Department will continue to actively carry out various popular science activities and take practical actions to promote the development of science education for the benefit of more students.
