Seize the Autumn Breeze Record of SHSID Middle and Primary School Professional Development Day (II)

October 18, 2023

Each semester, the Professional Development Day (PD Day) of SHSID’s middle and primary schools focuses on the training and development of young teachers. The sessions aim to help them gain a deeper understanding of the school's cultivation philosophies and adapt to the teaching environment and requirements of an esteemed international school.

PD Day — Putting on the Wings to Fly High

After two years of training, with the full support of the mentors and grade-level teams, this group of young teachers has grown rapidly and successfully, passing the full teacher assessment. Among them, two teachers completed the new teacher training a year early due to their outstanding professional competence.

Greeted by genuine applause, Mr. Liu Lian, principal of SHSID middle and primary school, Ms. Liu Fang, vice principal of SHSID middle and primary school and Mr. Shen Tianyuan, vice principal of SHSID middle and primary school, presented certificates, souvenirs, and flowers to congratulate them. The mentees then turned around and presented the flowers to their dear mentors. It was easy to see the heartfelt appreciation in this moment, as mentors act not only their advisors and colleagues, but also their role models and support systems.

Teachers' kindness is like the deep sea – vast and unfathomably deep. New teachers' representatives, Ms. Jia Lu and Ms. Huang Yujia, sincerely thanked their mentors for their careful teaching as well as the selfless help they offer their colleagues. Teaching is also a process of learning. Three mentors, Mr. Wu Xiaodong, Ms. Meng Shiyue and Ms. Cheng Liyan, also shared their experiences and gains in their exchange with the young teachers.

What Makes SHS? — The Code of SHSID

Mr. Ni Minxue, director of MPTC, under the title of "Here in ‘China’ I Dwell, What Makes SHS?", first shared with young teachers the historical legacy of SHS’s century-long educational sentiment and the overview of the development of its International Division over the past thirty years.

In this session, the teachers were divided into four groups, enthusiastically discussing how to establish a positive classroom atmosphere, effectively manage students' behavior, and how to communicate well with parents from multiple perspectives by focusing on several real-life cases of student management, behavioral norms, academic guidance, etc.

Subsequently, new teachers were divided into four groups for brainstorming, focusing on topics such as teaching style, classroom presentation skills, questioning and feedback strategies, and classroom management. Each group member first made preliminary thinking on their own, and then improved it through group discussion. Lastly, the group representatives shared and commented together. Everyone diligently noted down the highlights of their colleagues’ speeches in the training manual. From the confusion of working alone to enlightenment by group effort, the new teachers realized the most important code of SHSID – the power of cooperation!

The First Lesson — The Charm of the “Podium”

Based on the discussion and sharing, four groups of teachers teaching different grades and subjects took turns to step onto the podium in the context of the "first lesson" of this semester. Teachers displayed various teaching styles, some being calm and generous, some being witty and humorous, some being compact and smooth, and others being rigorous and meticulous. Each showcased a unique teaching demeanor. As an old Chinese saying goes, "By polishing jade it keeps shining, by studying we keep improving." While the teachers' experiences and teaching styles varied, it is the greatest gain to bring inspiration and thinking to everyone.

The autumn scenes are renewed every year. Every autumn, a new group of young teachers joins SHSID. Although the summer training is brief, the journey within the campus for us is still long. It is our hope that these young new staff members will bring vitality to the school and achieve brilliance in the upcoming academic year.
