Grades 9-10:Mental Health Activity: Remote Island
On September 20, at noon, the “Remote Island” activity took place in the first-floor lobby of the Zhentao Building. This engaging activity encouraged students to embark on an introspective journey, utilizing the art of painting. Imagine themselves marooned on a remote island, where they could only select three items and one companion. How would they navigate these choices? The primary aim of this activity was to grant students the opportunity to delve into their innermost needs and foster a deeper understanding of themselves.
Throughout the activity, students gradually unearthed their most profound desires. Some came to appreciate the paramount importance of survival, opting for items that catered to their fundamental necessities and ensured safety – such as water, food, and a first aid kit. Others directed their focus towards entertainment and relaxation, selecting items that promised joy and enjoyment – like a yacht, a mobile phone, and Wi-Fi. A few students chose to bring a cherished companion with them, whether it was their mother or a beloved pet cat, showcasing their longing for emotional connection and companionship.
Through this activity, students did more than simply choosing items; more importantly, they used painting to visualize their inner needs. This allowed them to intuitively recognize their true needs and gain a better understanding of themselves. It also helped students foster their creativity and expressive abilities – through painting, they were able to better convey their thoughts and feelings.
