Grade 9: Back-to-School Parents’ Night: Dreams Set Sail, Together Crafting Our Future
On the evening of September 8th, 2023, parents of Grade 9 at Shanghai High School International Division gathered together for an enthusiastic and highly anticipated Parents' Meeting. The aim of this meeting was to provide comprehensive information about the high school's educational philosophy and resources.
Part One: Unified Presentation in the Auditorium of the Xianmian Building
Parents were first guided to the auditorium of the Xianmian Building. Principal Ma Feng warmly welcomed everyone and introduced an overview of the high school, covering four aspects: academic standards, student development, faculty, and college application results. He provided insightful advice in a humorous manner, addressing the most pressing concerns of the parents and eliciting rounds of enthusiastic applause.
Following this, Vice Principal Liu Min explained the differences in academic requirements between middle and high school, focusing on approaches to learning, decision-making and individual pacing, and transformation of relationships and roles. She stated the importance of cultivating comprehensive skills and academic abilities during the high school years, encouraging parents and students to collaborate on study plans to foster self-driven learning.
Ms. Chen Lin from the Teacher Advisor Office then introduced the TA Office and various resources available for academic and psychological support for students. She emphasized the school's commitment to holistic student development and the importance of providing personalized support.
Lastly, Mr. Mathews introduced the "House" program. He emphasized the school's efforts to create more opportunities for students to broaden their horizons and development prospects.
Part Two: Meeting with Homeroom Teachers
After the presentations, parents were led to individual classrooms for face-to-face interactions with homeroom teachers. The teachers provided detailed insights into topics like curriculum and study plans. Parents had the opportunity to ask questions, address concerns, and feel the care and support extended by the school and teachers.
Additionally, homeroom teachers provided information about activities organized by the school for Grade 9 students during the first week. Parents expressed satisfaction with the rich array of activities and resources SHSID provides for students, believing these initiatives will help their children integrate into the new learning environment with increased confidence.
The entire Parents' Meeting was filled with information, warmth and interaction. This meeting not only brought the school and parents closer but also laid a strong foundation for the Grade 9 students' future endeavors. It is hoped that the school, students, and parents will work together in the days ahead to achieve academic and personal success.
