Achievements of IAA during Summer Vacation
I. Harvard Model U.N. – China
From August 18th-21st, a team of SHSID students traveled to Guangzhou, China, to participate in the Harvard Model U.N. – China (HMUN-C) 2023 4-day event. Over 500 students from different parts of China and abroad participated in the event.
The SHSID delegation achieved remarkable results. Engaging across 6 committees, the team earned 3 Best Delegate Awards and 3 Outstanding Delegate Awards. The delegation received the Best Small Delegation Award, the highest accolade rewarded to delegations with fewer than 10 participants.

II. International Affairs Association
The IAA Delegation
SHSID’s results in HMUN-C would not have been possible without the International Affairs Association (IAA). As one of SHSID's long-standing clubs established since 2008, the IAA brings together 60+ members across all four high school grades every year, training them for both national and international MUN conferences. The IAA’s weekly sessions help students in honing their public speaking, leadership, writing, and research skills while expanding their understanding of relevant global issues.

III. The IAA Experience at HMUN-C
What was the preparation process like?
IAA Delegation After the Awards Ceremony
Lucia: Spending three hours on a 1.5-min speech simply to make good first impressions, researching a lot, writing position papers, brainstorming potential solutions, striking up conversations with random people and adding their WeChats, trying to be charismatic, and freaking out a lot.
2. What is your most treasured experience from HMUN?
IAA Dinner Party at HMUN-C
Sophia: Hanging out with the IAA delegation in between committee sessions was my most treasured experience. Whether it be learning from the older delegates’ expertise or just bonding over a shared memory, HMUNC served as a team-building experience that reinforced my love for MUN and the IAA.
3. In what ways was HMUN-C meaningful, and what did you learn from it?
Aaron’s Bloc in HMUN-C
Aaron: Being a bloc leader of nearly 20 delegates, I took it upon myself to make sure that everybody participated in the solution process. I learned to not only divide the workload, but also to ensure that every member felt included. By far, the most meaningful act I accomplished over those four days was encouraging and witnessing two of my shy teammates make multiple speeches in front of the entire committee under the encouragement of our entire bloc.
IV. IAA’s Future
As the presence of COVID-19 recedes, in the upcoming year, the IAA aims to expand our presence by attending more in-person conferences, including ones taking place abroad. Beyond conferences, the IAA will welcome new members and organize club sessions that intend to enhance the skills of public speaking, diplomacy, research, and resolution drafting. We welcome everyone to join the IAA in the upcoming school year!
