Computer Science Project Roadshow Held
In today's world of rapid technological advancement, computer science (CS) has emerged as a powerful tool for identifying and solving real-life problems. From automating tedious tasks to developing sophisticated algorithms, CS provides a wide array of solutions that improves challenges identified in the real world.
In the 10th-grade Computer Science class, the final project of the school year challenged students to identify a problem encountered in the real world and then create a meaningful solution through programming. The flexibility and versatility of CS skills allow for creative problem-solving, furthermore enabling students to think outside the box. Apart from algorithm-building, the project also challenged students to use other skills of User-Interface designing, report writing, presenting, market researching, and more.
After a month of project development, starting from June 6, 2023, students presented their final project to their peers, introducing their unique solutions to problems they had identified. To solve the problem of price and discount differences across different platforms and products, a web crawler was designed to acquire prices of products and games, then display them on a webpage. To protect one’s eyes from overusing electronic devices, a model that detected the blinking rate was made to alert users of eye fatigue. Keeping up with the development of new AI tools, multiple students also incorporated the use of ChatGPT in their algorithm designs. Each group described their problem and approach to the solution, and then displayed a demonstration in their presentation.
Following the presentation, the audience then asked questions regarding the usage, development, and future insight of the project. To simulate user feedback, every student also rated each presentation from 5 different perspectives: a well-organized structure, a clear description, a successfully-demonstrated program, creativity, and good responses to questions from other students and teachers. From these reflections, presenters gained a clearer picture of their performances of their projects.
Student feedback:
"Throughout the project, we demonstrated exceptional teamwork. Each team member brought unique skills to the table, whether it was expertise in database management, front-end development, or algorithm design. I am thoroughly captivated by their enthusiasm in the project."
"One of the most impressive aspects of the project was my peers' ability to identify a real-world problem and solve it with the skills they had learned in class as well as with interdisciplinary knowledge. A memorable example was a recognition program which sorts garbage according to the conventional waste-separation system. Regardless of the fact if the applications tackled issues faced by businesses, organizations, or the environment, they all offered a meaningful solution to a cause that the students had deeply cared about. Their dedication to understanding the needs of potential users was evident in the user interface's intuitiveness; their global citizenship shined through their dedication to issues that society is currently combatting."
