Explore the Unknown through Chemical Experiments
A group of Grade-10 students at the Academy Course of Scientific Experiments took a hands-on approach to learn about chemistry through experimental exploration. The students worked on a variety of projects, including:
Saltwater power generation car: The students designed and built cars that could be powered by saltwater. They learned about the properties of saltwater and how it could be used to generate electricity.
Colorful plant indicators: The students extracted natural pigments from plants and used them to create their own colorful plant indicators. They learned about the chemistry of color and how it could be used to detect acids and bases.
Handmade soap: The students made their own soaps from scratch. They learned about the different ingredients that go into making soap and how to create a soap that is both effective and gentle on the skin.
Elephant toothpaste: The students created a colorful display of elephant toothpaste. They learned about the chemical reaction that caused this foam to erupt from a bottle.
Homemade colloid: The students created their own colloids, which were mixtures of two substances that normally do not mix. They learned about the different types of colloids and how they could be used in a variety of applications.
Melting point exploration: The students explored the melting points of different substances. They learned about the factors that affected melting points and how they could be used to identify different substances.
The students were really engaged in their work, asking great questions and really excited to learn. The course was designed to give them a deeper understanding of the world around them. By conducting their own experiments, the students learned how to think critically and solve problems. They also developed important skills, such as teamwork and communication.
