High School Math Open Classes: Diverse Integration and Rich Application

June 12, 2023

This semester, the High School Mathematics Department has demonstrated the interdisciplinary integration of mathematics in diverse ways, creating a multitude of application scenarios for high school mathematics. Throughout the semester, interesting classes and activities have provided students with enriching learning experiences. The teachers in the Department conducted interdisciplinary explorations, showcasing the integration of mathematics with other fields in multiple open classes.

Principal Ma's open-class theme was exploring distance in space. With the assistance of physical demonstrations and Geogebra software, Principal Ma intuitively demonstrated the distance between two points in space and gradually guided students from concrete to abstract thinking. Using analogies and reduction, students explored the distance between parallel lines, the distance from a point to a plane in space, the distance between parallel lines and planes, and finally, the distance between non-coplanar lines. The concept of distance in physics was abstracted into a mathematical model, and intuitive measurement problems could be systematically addressed through algebraic methods. Under Principal Ma's guidance, students independently explored and independently argued, efficiently building their knowledge networks.

Ms. Zhao's open-class theme was the representation of integers in different number systems. The class began with an email about binary numbers from a university and combined binary numbers with the historical transmission of information through beacons, Bagua, and the sixty-four hexagrams, showcasing traditional Chinese culture. The class chronologically traced the development of binary numbers and especially their application in the field of computer science. Through various teaching activities, this class demonstrated the combination of mathematics with Chinese culture and history and their applications in computer science.

Ms. Gao's open class was a joint lecture with Ms. Hu from the high school Biology Department, with the theme of the application of the chi-square test in ecological research. Ms. Gao interspersed explanations of the chi-square test principle in biology content, deepening students' understanding of statistical concepts such as theoretical value calculation, degrees of freedom, and critical values, allowing them to better understand the meaning of each step of the chi-square test from a mathematical perspective. This open class allowed students to learn about the sampling, data recording, data processing, and analysis processes in a simple ecological research practice, and fully appreciate the importance of statistical analysis as a significant tool supporting research on ecological relationships between species.

Ms. Yuan's open class theme was geometric series and investment decision-making. Using geometric series summation as a tool, this class used storytelling, scenario-based, and gamified methods to progressively, step by step, move from the familiar to the new, from the finite to the infinite, and from positive thinking to reverse thinking, integrating financial and accounting knowledge under the logic of mathematics. Financial terms were presented in a down-to-earth manner, so even if students had no financial background, they could intuitively feel financial concepts. In the class, investment decision-making differed from traditional mathematical problems, with no single correct answer, encouraging students' divergent and critical thinking, and cultivating their ability to make independent decisions based on facts.

The High School Mathematics Department has been committed to exploring the extensive applications of the mathematics discipline, bringing students a practical teaching experience. This exploration will continue to deepen, climbing to new heights!
