G1-8 | Academic Competition: The International Mathematical Modeling Competition (IMMC) Award-Winning News
The final presentation round of the 2022 International Mathematical Modelling Competition took place in May this year at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Teams from the SHSID Middle School Section, alongside other participating teams, overcame numerous challenges of the IMMC autumn and winter seasons, as well as the international round. After multiple rounds of strict evaluation, our teams won 1 Outstanding Award, 1 Finalist Award, and 11 First Prizes out of nearly 1,000 high school teams worldwide, representing the highest achievement of all the papers submitted this year. What is especially worth mentioning is the four outstanding team members Victoria, Eric, Alvin and Robert. After offline presentation rounds and further evaluation, they won the Outstanding Award of the International Mathematical Modeling Competition. The four students achieved the best performance in the history of our Middle School Section, breaking the record, which fully reflects their extraordinary capabilities.
The IMMC contest problems this year continued to demonstrate the values advocated by STEM education and combined Math, Technology, and Engineering, while connecting to our real life as well. The contest problems included “Smart Delivery of Books for Campus Library” (Problem A), “Investigating the emergence of pathogen X” (Problem B), “Is the roadside parking zone efficient?” (Problem C), “Reducing cost of energy consumption through heat and cold storage” (Problem D), “How to distinguish biological species by numbers” (Problem E), “Lifting Path Optimization for Hydraulic Crane” (Problem F), and “Using land: a valuable resource” (International Round Problem). In the almost-1-year period of preparation, our students fully demonstrated their independent learning and inquiry skills, laying a concrete foundation for their future learning.
We look forward to seeing more and more students show their full potential in the academics and extra-curricular courses, progressing on the way to becoming Independent Learners and Responsible Global Citizens.
