Middle and Primary School Math Department: G8 Math Art Project “When Math Meets PE”
Recently, the 8th grade in SHSID middle school section conducted a unique project that combined the study of mathematical quadratic equations with a basketball shooting activity in a physical education class, aiming to help students better understand the practical meaning of mathematical knowledge through practical applications.
In this project, students formed their own groups to investigate. Each group was required to record a video of a basketball shooting. By observing the parabola recorded in the video, they need to establish the corresponding coordinate system and solve for the corresponding quadratic equation.
Afterward, the videos were exchanged among the groups. By observing others' shooting videos, students tested whether the coordinate system and equation solution were correct. By observing the first half of the video, students needed to combine it with relevant mathematical knowledge to verify and give predictions to determine whether the group could make a successful shot.
Finally, the students extended and improved their critical thinking by applying this basketball shooting experiment to other real-world cases, such as archery and shot put, for more complex applications and solutions.
By combining mathematical knowledge with practical applications, this project will increase students' interest and motivation in learning. The project also achieved integration and communication between disciplines. As a universal sport, the application of mathematical quadratic equations can help players to better master the skills and methods of shooting and improve the success rate of shooting. Through this project, students not only deepened their understanding and application of mathematical knowledge but also improved their knowledge and understanding of sports, laying a solid foundation for their future study and life.
